Most folks are familiar with the term PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. We usually assume that means being very reactive after experiencing a specific devastating event, like being in war or being in a physical altercation. However, repeated exposure to a toxic environment can do the same thing because it affects our Autonomic Nervous System just as much.

There are other ways in which people can be traumatized. Were you raised by parents who were constantly berating you? Is your partner continually gaslighting you so you can’t trust yourself to know what’s real? Did you experience a high-conflict divorce? Regardless of how you were traumatized, if your Autonomic Nervous System has been hijacked, you are experiencing PTSD.
